Mother-of-two, 48, sues hair salon after she suffered a debilitating near-fatal stroke caused while getting her hair washed

A California mother-of-two is suing a hair salon after she suffered a debilitating stroke caused by getting her hair washed.

Elizabeth Smith, 48, from San Diego, has filed a lawsuit against Blowbunny Salon in 4S Ranch after suffering from ‘beauty parlor stroke syndrome’.

The rare condition occurs when the neck is overextended while hair is being washed, causing a vertebrae to damage an artery in the spine, leading to a blood clot which in turn causes a stroke.

According to a lawsuit filed by personal injury attorney Spencer Busby, who is representing Smith, her ordeal began back on December 23, 2013 when she went to the salon to get a blowout.

While there she says she spent around ten minutes getting her hair washed, during which time her head was lowered back into a salon-style wash basin.

The lawsuit states that neither the bowl nor the chair were adjusted for Smith’s small frame, causing her neck to become overextended.
